Ask the Physician > What's My Risk for Breast Cancer?

What is my risk of getting breast cancer?

A women's lifetime risk for breast cancer is 12.5% or 1 in 8.  For women age 40 the risk is 1 in 67. At 50 the risk increases to 1 in 36 or 2.77%. At 60 1 in 29 women will develop breast cancer.by age 70 the risk is over 4% as 1 in 24 women will develop the disease.

The Gail Model has been developed to assess any individuals risk through a series of a few simple questions. Adjusting for age, race, time of first menses, time of first birth, and family history the patients individual risk can be determined.
